Today, as the world observes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW), GABRIELA Alliance of Filipino Women, together with migrants organization Migrante International, joined the families of overseas Filipino workers in a speak-out forum in an urban poor community in Quezon City highlighting the different human rights violations that Filipinos overseas are very prone to.
GABRIELA gathered victims of sexual abuses and their relatives during its regular group therapy session called Usapang Babae today to demand President Benigno Aquino III as commander-in-chief to take the necessary action, even to the extent of ordering the dismissal of state forces that women accused of perpetrating grave sexual abuses against girls and harassing their families when they sought justice.

Organizations focusing on women and children’s rights held a picket in front of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo today to highlight the human rights violations under the Aquino government. This is in time for the March 19 meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Committee in New York that is set to discuss the rights situation in the Philippines.

In a statement, Gabriela secretary general Lana Linaban scored the magazine not only for its latest “racist” cover, but also for “its usual portrayal of women as cheap commodities that cater to macho fantasies.”
